Source: U.S. Department of Education ________________________________ NIDA Family Check-Up Webinar Please join the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, National Institutes of Health, National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) for a webinar on Thursday, December 19th from 2-3:30pm to gain helpful tips and guidance on how to talk to your kids about the risks associated with substance use. The NIDA Family Check-Up is an online resource to help keep your children drug-free. The Family Check-Up includes strategies that guide parents on effective communication skills to catch problems early, support positive behavior, and stay aware of what is happening in their children's lives. Videos show examples of how to use the strategies outlined on the website. During the webinar, NIDA Family Check-up researcher, Tom Dishion, Ph.D. of Arizona State University, will provide an interactive overview of his intervention research, and intervention strategies significant to youth development. Since then, Fuel Up to Play 60 has reached over 38 million kids in 73,000 schools, encouraging them to choose good-for-you foods and get 60 minutes of play a day. The NDC and NFL, along with GENYOUth Foundation, U.S. Department of Agriculture, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the U.S. Department of Education are proud to announce a renewed $250 million public-private partnership to benefit America's youth. It outlines steps to improve civics learning in schools, including getting teachers to move beyond textbooks to get students more directly engaged with primary sources; recognizing and rewarding schools that develop exemplary approaches to civic learning; and teaching not just about rights but also responsibilities, such as "learning what is meant by making a sacrifice for the common good." Source: Education Commission of the States ________________________________ U.S. Department of Justice/OJJDP Partners With Tribal Organization To Advance Youth Leadership in Indian Country The U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention recently announced<http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/newsroom/pressreleases/2013/ojppr120613.pdf> a new partnership with United National Indian Tribal Youth<http://www.unityinc.org/> (UNITY), a national organization promoting personal development, citizenship, and leadership among American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) youth ages 14-24. OJJDP has awarded UNITY $850,000 to plan and implement the National Intertribal Youth Leadership Development Initiative<http://www.ojjdp.gov/grants/solicitations/FY2013/TYPLeadership.pdf>, which will offer regional and national youth gatherings, opportunities, and services to develop leadership skills among yearly cohorts of tribal youth. Announcing the partnership, OJJDP Administrator Robert L. Listenbee said, "The initiative will build on the successes of past OJJDP National Intertribal Youth Leadership Summits and further expand the leadership development support that OJJDP offers to tribal youth."
