American Academy of Pediatrics Disaster Preparedness Resources for Children

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has a long-standing history of taking steps to improve preparedness for children, including developing a comprehensive AAP Children & Disasters website devoted to disaster preparedness for children. This site offers resources for child care providers, professionals who care for children and youth with special needs, hospitals, pediatricians, pediatric practices, and schools. The site includes important information and links to help prepare for disasters:

Newborn Screening During Emergencies

Pediatric Preparedness Resource Kit

Collaborative Disaster Networks Survey Project

Vaccine Storage in a Disaster

State Initiatives

Children and Youth with Special Needs

Much of the information on these webpages has been reviewed by the AAP’s Disaster Preparedness Advisory Council (DPAC). The DPAC includes six pediatricians with experience involving disasters, and liaisons to key organizations such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the US Food and Drug Administration, and the US Department of Homeland Security.

The AAP offers information and resources directed at parents via its HealthyChildren.org website. Key topics related to disaster preparedness are:

Getting Your Family Prepared for a Disaster

Moving Children and Families Beyond Trauma

Talking to Children About Tragedies and Other News Events

The AAP also publishes a Children & Disasters newsletter on a quarterly or as-needed basis. To see past newsletters, visit the AAP Disaster Preparedness Contact Network page. If you would like to subscribe to this newsletter, please send your name and e-mail address to [log in to unmask].
