Delivering the Scientific Facts about Drug Abuse to Teens

The year 2014 marks the 4th annual National Drug Facts Week (NDFW), a health observance created by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) to deliver the scientific facts to youth about the effects and consequences of drug abuse on the brain, body and behavior.  The webinar “Delivering the Scientific Facts about Drug Abuse to Teens” is scheduled for Monday

December 9, 2013, from 2-3 pm ET

More than 500 educational events and activities will be held by high schools, community centers, juvenile justice systems, treatment centers, prevention programs and other organizations across the country to shatter the myths about drugs and addiction:

-"Marijuana isn't addictive"

-"Prescription drugs aren't dangerous because we get them from doctors"

-"Using drugs that aren't prescribed to you is legal and you can't get in trouble from it"

-"Treatment doesn't work"

Learn from someone who has organized an event for National Drug Facts Week how easy it is to utilize NIDA's free materials, such as the Shatter the Myths booklet and the National Drug IQ Challenge.

Dr. Grabus joined the Office of Science Policy and Communications (OSPC) in November 2010 as the NIDA Deputy Press Officer and began managing the press team in early 2013, bringing a strong science background to NIDA's media outreach efforts. Sheri was trained as a neuroscientist and has a Ph.D. from American University in Psychopharmacology and Neuroscience. As a postdoc at Virginia Commonwealth University, she designed mouse models of nicotine dependence and reward, and studied nicotinic agonists, antagonists, and bupropion. She has also taught at the college level-including courses in psychology, substance abuse prevention and treatment, and she has lectured on drug dependence, pharmacology and drugs and pain control.  Prior to joining NIDA, Sheri served as Executive Director for a small-town Chamber of Commerce and was in charge of all marketing, public relations, sales and media relations.

Mr. Vicini is a Coalition Coordinator for Operation UNITE, an anti-drug organization serving southern and eastern Kentucky. Tom assists with the formation and operations of community coalitions (in a 10-county area) working in substance abuse education and prevention. He collaborates with schools, parent groups, churches, businesses and individuals to implement programming designed to prevent drug abuse. Tom manages youth programming that aims to promote healthy, drug-free living, and he organizes free youth baseball camps and other programs, including the Shoot Hoops Not Drugs camp and Hooked on Fishing-Not On Drugs. Tom also assists individuals seeking treatment for substance abuse addiction and directs individuals in recovery to available programs. Tom has been a volunteer coach of the Tri-City Little League in Harlan County and other teams for over 34 years. In 2012, he was honored by The Partnership at Drugfree.org and Major League Baseball Charities with their third annual Commissioner's Play Healthy Award. In 2012, he also received the Hal Rogers Leadership Award for Outstanding Leadership and Dedication to Operation UNITE and a Congressional Tribute from Congressman Rogers for working with youth through Operation UNITE and Tri-City Little League Baseball.
